Shore Fishing for Spanish Mackerel

This past weekend, I teamed up with Ethan for an exciting shore fishing trip at Saemangeum Seawall in Gunsan. Known for its expansive coastline and stunning views, the Seawall did not disappoint. We packed our gear and set off for a rewarding adventure targeting two iconic species: Spanish Mackerel and Hairtail.

The Gear We Used

For this trip, we brought along a solid setup to handle the fast and powerful fish we were after. We used 9ft medium-heavy rods paired with 2500 spinning reels. To ensure we could handle the strength of the fish and the distance required for casting from shore, we spooled our reels with 15lb braid line and attached a 30lb leader.

The key to success was using 30g to 40g metal jigs as our primary lure, perfect for mimicking baitfish and attracting predatory strikes. An extra special mention goes to the Blackstone T8 braid line—our very own braid, which performed excellently throughout the trip. Its smoothness and strength were perfect for casting far into the deeper waters and gave us confidence when reeling in strong fighters like Spanish Mackerel.  Carried Blackstone Gear 5L Fanny Pack to secure our electronics.

The Catch

The weather was perfect, and the waters were teeming with life. We caught a few stunning Spanish Mackerel and some razor-sharp Hairtail, both of which put up an exhilarating fight. The combination of strong currents and quick, agile fish made for an exciting and memorable fishing experience.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of reeling in a fish under the backdrop of a rising or setting sun, the cool sea breeze at your back, and the anticipation of that next bite.

Why Saemangeum Seawall is Perfect for Shore Fishing

Saemangeum Seawall is an ideal spot for anglers seeking both adventure and tranquility. The vast open water allows you to cast far and fish for species that swim close to shore. Whether you're a seasoned fisherman or just looking to try your luck, this location offers a fantastic mix of beauty and productivity.

For those interested in Spanish Mackerel and Hairtail, this is the place to be. The Seawall offers long stretches of accessible shoreline, giving you plenty of room to explore and find the perfect spot for casting.

Wrapping It Up

Overall, this trip was another reminder of how rewarding shore fishing can be with the right setup and location. Saemangeum Seawall in Gunsan remains one of my favorite spots, and the use of our Blackstone T8 braid line made all the difference in tackling the powerful Mackerel and Hairtail.

Whether you're after your next trophy catch or just want to enjoy a peaceful day on the shore, I highly recommend this spot. Grab your gear, and head to Saemangeum—you won’t be disappointed!
