If you're serious about fishing, you've likely heard of Pro-Cure — one of the most trusted names in fish attractants. But with both gel and oil options available, many anglers wonder: What's the difference? And when should I use each one?

Who Is Pro-Cure?

Founded in the Pacific Northwest, Pro-Cure is a U.S.-based company known for producing premium fish attractants using real bait, natural ingredients, and scientifically proven scent formulas. Trusted by professional anglers and weekend hobbyists alike, Pro-Cure offers an extensive lineup of gel and oil-based attractants for both freshwater and saltwater fishing.

Pro-Cure Gel

Pro-Cure's Super Gel is a thick, sticky attractant made from genuine bait, infused with amino acids and UV enhancement. It's designed to adhere to lures and soft plastics for a long time, making it ideal for:

  • Casting lures, jigs, and crankbaits
  • Trolling in both fresh and saltwater
  • Species-specific targeting (bass, trout, halibut, rockfish, etc.)
  • Situations where long-lasting scent retention is key

Because it sticks well to surfaces, gel is perfect for repeated casts. You’ll want to reapply every 20–30 casts or as needed.

Pro-Cure Oil

Pro-Cure's oil formula is thinner and made for soaking bait and dispersing scent in the water column. It’s best used when you want to create a scent trail and cover more area. It works well for:

  • Bottom fishing, surf fishing, or slow-drift conditions
  • Soaking sponges, cotton swabs, or bait rigs
  • Using with live or cut bait
  • Marinating bait before use

To use effectively, anglers often soak a sponge or cotton in the oil and tie it near the sinker. This keeps the scent dispersing naturally in the water. Reapply every 30–60 minutes.

Best of Both Worlds

Want to maximize your chances? Use both gel and oil together:

  1. Apply Gel to your lure or soft bait for targeted, long-lasting attraction.
  2. Soak a sponge with Oil and place it near your sinker to create a scent trail that travels far.

This combo is especially effective when targeting scent-driven species like halibut, cod, or red sea bream.

🎣 Blackstone’s Recommendation for Halibut and Sea Bream

For halibut fishing, we recommend using:

  • Gel on your jig or bait for persistent scent adhesion
  • Oil-soaked sponge tied above your sinker for wide scent dispersion in deeper water

For Black and Red Sea Bream (also known as chinu and madai):

  • Use Gel on soft plastics or bait hooks when casting from shore or boat
  • Add Oil to your bait box or sponge rig to attract more fish in current

This dual method helps hold nearby fish longer while drawing distant ones to your zone.

Final Thoughts

Whether you're casting from shore or dropping deep from a boat, choosing the right Pro-Cure formula can make a noticeable difference. Gel stays on and sticks tight, while oil spreads wide and lures fish from afar.

The next time you hit the water, bring both — and fish smarter, not harder.
